How to Become a Chartered Accountant (CA) in India
Register for the CA Foundation Course:
- Eligibility: Register after completing your 10th standard exams. You can appear for the exam after passing your 12th standard exams.
- Exam: The Foundation exam consists of four papers: Principles and Practice of Accounting, Business Laws and Business Correspondence and Reporting, Business Mathematics and Logical Reasoning & Statistics, and Business Economics & Business and Commercial Knowledge.
Pass the CA Foundation Exam:
- Preparation: Dedicate time to study and understand the concepts thoroughly.
- Mode: The exam is paper-pencil based.
Register for the CA Intermediate Course:
After passing the Foundation exam, you can register for the Intermediate course. Alternatively, if you are a graduate/postgraduate with 55% in commerce or 60% in non-commerce streams, or have cleared the Intermediate level of ICSI or ICMAI, you can directly enter the Intermediate course.
Pass the CA Intermediate Exams:
- Exam Structure: The Intermediate course has two groups with a total of eight papers. You must pass both groups.
- Group 1 Papers: Accounting, Corporate and Other Laws, Cost and Management Accounting, and Taxation.
- Group 2 Papers: Advanced Accounting, Auditing and Assurance, Enterprise Information Systems & Strategic Management, and Financial Management & Economics for Finance.
- Mode: The exam is paper-pencil based.
Register for Articleship Training:
- Duration: 3 years of practical training under a practicing CA.
- Experience: Gain hands-on experience in accounting, auditing, taxation, and financial management.
Register for the CA Final Course:
- Timing: You can register for the Final course during the last six months of your articleship.
Pass the CA Final Exams:
- Exam Structure: The Final course has two groups with a total of eight papers.
- Group 1 Papers: Financial Reporting, Strategic Financial Management, Advanced Auditing and Professional Ethics, and Corporate and Economic Laws.
- Group 2 Papers: Strategic Cost Management and Performance Evaluation, Elective Paper, Direct Tax Laws and International Taxation, and Indirect Tax Laws.
- Mode: The exam is paper-pencil based.
Complete Articleship Training:
- Requirement: Ensure you complete the full three-year period of articleship.
Complete Additional Courses:
- ICITSS: Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills, to be completed before articleship.
- AICITSS: Advanced Integrated Course on Information Technology and Soft Skills, to be completed during the last two years of articleship.
Apply for ICAI Membership:
- Final Step: After completing all exams and training, apply for membership with ICAI to become a Chartered Accountant.
